Seems like this should be a simple question to answer. Don’t you just need a “Contact Us” e-mail address for your site? While you can certainly get by with a single e-mail address, additional addresses will add functionality to your site and make it easier for you to distinguish and categorize messages you receive. Here are a few suggestions for additional e-mail addresses:
Consider any additional needs you may have and then make sure your Web Host provider allows you to utilize the number of email addresses you need.
If your Web Host provider has provided you with a UNIX based web site, then you may not need more than a few unique addresses, and certain addresses like sales@yourwebsite.com may not be available as unique e-mail addresses. Why? UNIX uses ID’s like sales@, webmaster@ and others as ID’s for the main e-mail account of the computer, restricting them from your use. Don’t worry though as you generally are allowed an unlimited amount of e-mail aliases which will allow people to use the Sales@ or Webmaster@ prefixes.
What’s an e-mail alias? Additional email addresses that point to an already existing main email address. Using email aliases means that additional email addresses may be setup without the need for additional separate email accounts. While you may not be able to use an email alias to subscribe to various internet services, using them for your website is a convenient way of organizing incoming information.
When a user uses a email alias such as sales@yourwebsite.com, you don’t actually set up a sales email address on yourwebsite.com. instead, you merely read your default email account (generally something like yourwebsite@yourwebsite.com) and all emails to yourwebsite.com that don’t have a specific email account set up will be sent to the default account. The TO address (i.e. sales@yourwebsite.com) will still be there for you to filter on in your in-basket making it easy for you to sort and respond to various inquiries.
