One of the biggest problems with e-Books is the very thing that makes them most attractive. E-Books are electronic format, and therefore, easily copied. When you create your e-Book using MS WordÒ, WordPerfectÒ, WordPadÒ or even NotePadÒ, anyone can easily steal your content and reuse it without your receiving compensation for your hard work. You’ve worked hard to create your product. Now you have to protect it.
Remember when I told you that I wouldn’t try to sell you something unless it would make a difference for your business. Here are a couple of tools worthy of your consideration if you plan to publish your own e-Book. AcrobatÒ

By far the easiest way to protect your content and provide your e-Book in a format that is compatible across all platforms is with Adobe AcrobatÒ. AcrobatÒ provides you with a means to make your document readable by anyone with a computer and internet access (i.e. anyone who buys your book), and provides user defined levels of security to protect your document from content theft. Any word-processing program will interface to AcrobatÒ (directly or through the print spooler). AcrobatÒ accurately converts all text, fonts and graphics to a document that can be easily distributed to all in the final electronic format. The purchaser of your e-Book simply downloads Adobe Acrobat ReaderÒ (FREE DOWNLOAD) and they can view your e-Book. What could be easier than that? Now the bad news. AcrobatÒ is a bit pricy with the latest version retailing for about $300 from Adobe (about $80 less on eBay). However, there is an important trick you can use that works for most of the major software suppliers. Instead of purchasing the latest version of the software from the supplier, you can buy an older version for much less. Just make sure that the version you buy supports the operating system you are running on or some of the features may not be available, even if they successfully install. Once you have the Older Version installed and registered, upgrade to the latest version from Adobe. For instance, I can purchase Acrobat 4.0 on eBay for about $25. To upgrade to 7.0 on the Adobe site (current version at time of this writing) will cost me about $99 so for less than $125, I can get a $300 piece of software. I’ve saved $175! The key here is that the software you buy on eBay must be licensable. Adobe is one of the more studious about their licenses and may require you to actually file paperwork with them to transfer the license. Make sure that you get the name of the individual who originally licensed the software to ensure that you’ll have what you need if they require the paperwork.
QUICK TIP: In case you didn’t catch it, here is another opportunity for you to sell something you have just laying around on the shelf. If you have older copies of software (MS OfficeÒ, Adobe AcrobatÒ, etc.) sell them on eBay and advertise in your content that the user can use your Licensable copy to upgrade to the newer version. This will add value to the product you are selling. Be sure to check the Software Vendor’s site to make sure what versions a person can upgrade from so that you don’t mislead potential buyers. And of course, if you don’t have the serial numbers to register the older version, this Quick Tip is NOT for you!
